I met Adderley in 1970 at my ?. I and my date saw him that night eating by himself in a restaurant and joined him. We talked for quite a while, I asked him who he thought was the greatest jazz musician of all time. He told me J.S. Bach.

We wound up going back to my basement apartment where the rest of the crew joined us. They were jamming along with me on a basic electronic keyboard. I can still hear Joe Zawinul telling me, 'You're right. You're not very good." He took over and I listened and learned. I asked Nate Adderley how he managed the subtones so well on his cornet. He replied "Practice."

Some time around two in the morning I remembered I'd left my date at the restaurant, sticking her with the bill. She never talked to me again.
