A form of stick-fighting accompanied by music and singing that is practiced in Trinidad and Tobago during carnival. A lead vocalist or chantwell (chantuelle) sings call-and-response chants called lavways, lionizing and cheering on the stickfighters. Carnival songs are considered to be derived from calinda chants. This form of music gradually evolved into modern calypso. 1720s– .
